Hey there! VMware continues to enhance its flagship virtualization platform, vSphere. Earlier this year they announced the latest updates to vSphere 8 . Packed with innovative features, this release is designed to support modern workloads, improve operational efficiency, and boost sustainability. vSphere 8 Update 3 will be available for customers as an integral component of both of VMware's lead offerings – VMware Cloud Foundation 5.2 and VMware vSphere Foundation 5.2. In this blog, I'll try to break it down for you in simple terms.
Top Features in vSphere 8.0 U3
1. Better Operations and Easy Updates
Updating vSphere can sometimes feel like a task, especially in big environments. This update brings enhanced lifecycle management to reduce downtime. Now, you can apply patches without restarting or moving virtual machines—thanks to the ESXi Live Patching feature! It’s fast, smooth, and keeps systems running. Virtual machines are Fast-Suspend-Resumed (FSR) as part of the host remediation process. As part of this action, a host enters partial maintenance mode, a new mount revision is loaded and patched and the vm is then fast-suspend-resumed to consume the patched mount revision. This action is non-disruptive to most virtual machines!
ESXi Live Patching delivers the following key benefits to customers:
Non-disruptive patches
Ability to deliver critical fixes quickly within required SLAs
Enhanced system reliable with seamless lifecycle integration
2. Improved AI and GPU Performance
If you’re working with AI or machine learning workloads, this update is a treat. It expands GPU and DPU support, allowing faster processing. Dual-DPU support means better network performance, security, and resilience. Plus, it provides redundancy if a DPU fails.
Dual DPU support provides the following key benefits to customers:
Accelerated Infrastructure Network Function
Simplified DPU Management
Enhanced Security and Resilience
3. Empowering Developers
Developers now get more freedom to manage infrastructure. With the new IaaS control plane, they can easily set up resources like VMs and Kubernetes clusters without waiting for IT teams. A simplified UI in vCenter makes things even more user-friendly. Through a new UI available in vCenter, called the Local Consumption Interface, VMware vSphere Foundation provides a seamless experience to developers to work more efficiently and effectively, accelerating the development and deployment of new applications and services.
Plus, there’s a new independent Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG) service that updates independently of vSphere, keeping Kubernetes versions fresh and flexible.
These new capabilities deliver the following key benefits to customers:
Alignment with Upstream Kubernetes: Ensures TKG service stays current with the latest features, bug fixes, and security patches by aligning with upstream Kubernetes versions, independent of vSphere release cycles.
Flexibility in Update Timing: Allows for asynchronous updates, providing organizations with the ability to implement updates at their own pace, reducing disruptions and maintaining continuous operations.
Streamlined Management: Simplifies the management process by using vSphere services to manage TKG versions, offering a centralized platform for orchestrating Kubernetes deployments and enhancing operational efficiency.
4. Security Boost
Security has been leveled up! vSphere now supports PingFederate for identity federation and includes enhanced guidance for securing vSAN services. TLS 1.3 support ensures the latest encryption practices are in place.
5. Enhanced Workload Performance
Kubernetes clusters now auto-scale based on demand. This means better resource usage—scale down when idle and scale up when needed. Plus, GPUs can now be shared more flexibly between workloads, improving efficiency.
6. Support for Stretched Clusters
For those managing vSAN stretched clusters across locations, Supervisors can now be deployed across physical sites. This makes it easier to manage high-availability setups.
Other Handy Improvements
Customized cluster images to remove unnecessary components.
Faster updates for edge deployments.
More control over DPU and ESXi updates.
In Summary
This update is all about making IT operations easier, supporting modern workloads, and enhancing security. Whether you're an admin, a developer, or working with AI, there’s something in it for everyone.
